I have both a cheap USB Samsung and a U.S.$100 no-name USB Blu-Ray reader/burner and both work fine for ripping CDs. I also use way more stable and low noise +12V and +5V to power Al's writer, which also helps with more precise BR disc burns. (Al can chime in here to correct me if he is still around ). This resulted in a less well focussed spot IIRC. My reply was tongue in cheek and directed at al.fe who actually designed my internal LG GGW H20L BR writer, which incidentally creates rips sounding a little better than later models where they reduced the Laser Power a little because of it running a little warmer than desired.
